The styloglossus is the most lateral extrinsic muscle of the dog tongue anatomy. The transverse muscles run laterally across the tongue connecting the medial septum and the lateral aspect of the tongue. The tongue is the principal organ of the sense of taste and an important organ of speech.

Lets begin with the extrinsic muscles of the tongue which include the genioglossus hyoglossus styloglossus and palatoglossus. The styloglossus is the most lateral extrinsic muscle of the dog tongue anatomy. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels.
